5 Free Items You Need When Painting
We’ve painted 10 spaces in our home thus far, with 6 more spaces to go. Along the way, we figured out what items we could repurpose to assist us in prepping & painting. We’ve complied a list of the top 5 free items you need when painting.
1st FREE ITEM – SMALL BOX WITH A LID
Paint preparations include removing curtain rod hardware & switch plate covers. The small pieces of hardware & screws can get lost easily.
What better way to keep everything together than to use a small box with a lid? Since I was once a beauty subscription box junkie, I have tons of empty boxes just waiting to be used.
Don’t fret if you don’t have beauty subscription boxes laying around, I’m sure with some “in the box thinking”, you could find something similar to repurpose. I wouldn’t be myself if I didn’t attach a label to this box. Haha!
Seriously, this is a game-changer! It makes prepping for paint and “reassembling” your room after painting hassle-free.
2nd FREE ITEM – BROWN PAPER BAGS
If there’s anything you should know about us …we love privacy & HATE naked windows. In our opinion, painting a space is no excuse for naked windows. Thankfully “that bag containing other bags” came in handy! Haha!
Repurpose brown paper bags by cutting them up & then tape to your windows. The cut brown paper bags can be folded & reused for another painting project!
Do you know why you should get as much use as possible from brown paper bags?…
Because according to Trader Joe’s, (1) 15-20 year old tree only makes 700 paper bags! You can bet we’re going to keep reusing these bags until they have no life left.
Tip: Once you start painting, you can cut the “faux curtains” above the window lock to open the window for air & ventilation.
3rd FREE ITEM – WOODEN PAINT STICKS
Although it’s a “no-brainer” this one is so easy to forget. Don’t forget to grab your free wooden paint sticks when you purchase paint.
It’s not a bad idea to grab 1 or 2 extra to keep on hand, just in case you would forget to pick them up in the future. Your future self will thank you!
4th FREE ITEM – SMALL PLASTIC CONTAINER
Those expensive “handy pails” that are supposed to make cutting-in easier when painting, don’t work. The problem I had with these “handy pails” is that they are entirely too deep. This becomes a problem because the last thing you want to do when cutting-in is to dip your entire brush into the paint.
My Solution: Repurpose a small plastic container. Genius!
Who knew this free painting item would work better than those pricey “handy pails”? The shallow plastic container & the BEST EVER paint brush for cutting-in, the Wooster Shortcut, is the perfect combo.
5th FREE ITEM – PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS
This item is not only free but it saves you TIME & MONEY! Whether you’re in-between coats of paint or want to take a break before you’re finished painting, you need to use plastic grocery bags!!!
Whenever you take a hiatus from painting, wrap your paint brushes & paint rollers in plastic bags. Wrapping used paint brushes in plastic bags prevents oxygen from drying them out. We have even gone a few days with brushes being wrapped in plastic bags, (especially on this headache of a paint job.) & when we resumed painting, the brushes were still perfect.
- It saves you time, because you don’t need to clean your brushes before you’re finished painting.
- It saves you money because you’re not tossing out dried out paint brushes & rollers.
