Small Kitchen Pantry Makeover & A Floating Shelf Hack

Small Kitchen Pantry Makeover & A Floating Shelf Hack

Small Kitchen Pantry Makeover & A Floating Shelf Hack

We are so excited to reveal our small kitchen pantry makeover, complete with faux white floating shelves. What’s the DIY “secret” to making faux floating shelves? The secret is in the design of the brackets & painting the brackets the same color as the walls to give the illusion of floating shelves.

Unlike actual floating shelves, you don’t have to worry about these shelves warping from weight. Please don’t be one of those people using actual floating shelves for storage & ignoring the weight capacity. There’s nothing more unattractive than a weighed-down floating shelf.

SUPPLIES WE USED TO CREATE A KITCHEN PANTRY WITH FAUX FLOATING SHELVES:

TOOLS NEEDED:

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Mud Compound
  • Shelves
  • Shelving Brackets
    • We used 15 brackets at 14″ long each
  • Screws
  • Paint
    • We used Behr’s Euro Gray, our favorite cool dark paint color

MUSICAL KITCHEN CLOSETS

This small kitchen pantry makeover is part 1 of our 3-part musical kitchen closet series. We discussed in our kitchen closet plans how this closet has evolved overtime to suit our needs. It was originally a small pantry with wire shelving, until we transformed it into a tiny coat closet.

THE NEW PLANS: CONVERTING A COAT CLOSET INTO A KITCHEN PANTRY

The only problem with the coat closet is that we had to use the “shove & shut” technique to close it, which isn’t exactly a selling feature. With resale in mind, we changed directions & decided to convert this coat closet to a small kitchen pantry with DIY floating shelves.

HOW I CREATED FAUX FLOATING SHELVES IN OUR SMALL KITCHEN PANTRY MAKEOVER – THE STEP-BY-STEP:

STEP ONE:

  • I removed the old closet rods, patched & sanded all holes.

PRO TIPS:

  • When patching holes, apply mud compound in thin layers with the help of a trowel, until the desired “build-up” is achieved.
  • Once each layer has dried, use a sanding block to sand each layer to a smooth texture, before applying another layer of compound mud.

STEP TWO:

  • Mock-up where you want your faux white floating shelves to be installed in your kitchen pantry.
  • You can have as much or as little space as you want for your floating shelves.

PRO TIPS:

  • Use a pencil, ruler, tape measure & level to draw lines on the wall where you plan to install shelves.
  • Take the time to properly prepare & mock-up your floating shelves to prevent errors in execution.

STEP THREE:

  • Cut the shelving brackets to size, using a miter saw.
    • Since this kitchen closet is switching functions with another one of our kitchen closets, we were able to repurpose the “old” brackets from the other closet.

PRO TIPS:

  • If you don’t own a miter saw, most home improvement stores will cut {purchased} materials for free or for a small fee.

STEP FOUR:

  • Install the shelf supports.
    • I started by installing the one in the back first & then installed the ones on the left & right.
  • The order of installation doesn’t matter, but make sure all 3 of the shelf supports are at the same elevation & anchored into the wall.

STEP FIVE:

  • Paint the walls, ceiling & faux floating shelf hardware the same color.
  • We used our favorite paint color, which is also the same paint we used for our kitchen makeover, Behr’s Euro Gray.

PRO TIPS:

  • To ensure a clean surface for painting, use a tack cloth to wipe down the kitchen pantry of any dust & debris.
  • Using painter’s tape, protect any door or base trim from paint.

STEP SIX:

  • Cut your white floating shelves to size, using a cordless circular saw.
    • Thankfully we were able to re-purpose the shelving from our other kitchen closet, which is great for our home improvement budget!
  • Being careful to not scuff your newly painted wall, install the floating shelves onto their brackets.

PRO TIPS:

  • Measure twice, cut once. It’s possible that not all of your shelves will have the same measurements, so take the time to measure the dimensions for each shelf. For example, our small kitchen pantry was a ½” off from the front & back.

THE UGLY DUCKLING GETS A MEDIA CENTER MAKEOVER

During a “sale-ing” trip to the Habitat for Humanity Restore, Tasha was drawn to this beat-up piece of vintage furniture with a media center makeover on her mind. The store classified it as a desk, which worked in our favor, because desks were 50% off that day.

media center before

It was in bad shape, reeked of cigarette smoke & had gnarly gashes & scratches. My wife tried her best to convey her vision of transforming this into a beautiful & functional media center for our formal living room.

Since I’m still a protégé at furniture makeovers, it was difficult to see past the ugliness. With my wife’s vision & with the half off price of only $25.00, we didn’t have anything to lose with this media center makeover.

MEDIA CENTER MAKEOVER – WHAT WE USED:

  • Wood filler
    • We used Elmer’s Pro Bond Wood fill in Golden Oak.
  • Palm sander
  • Zinsser’s Primer {Primer & Sealer}
  • Valspar’s Furniture Paint
    • We got ours tinted in the color Fairmont Penthouse Mosaic Blue.
  • Rub ‘n Buff
    • We used Antique Gold.
  • Matte Black Spray paint
    • We used this for the inner hardware.

Although the media center was beat-up, unloved, & slightly ugly, it had GREAT BONES! It was structurally-sound & made with solid wood. You’d never be able to purchase a media center(similar to this one) made of solid wood for $25.00. Vintage Media Center Makeover Challenge Accepted!

Just to prove a point & put things in perspective, this media center/buffet (below) is somewhat similar to what we purchased. The only difference is that this one is not made of solid wood & retails at IKEA for $449.00! Our desk is made of solid wood for a cool $25.00!

DIY Large Artwork Under $20 (Bigger Is Better On A Budget)

DIY LARGE ARTWORK UNDER $20 (Bigger Is Better… On A Budget)

Is bigger really better? This DIY shower curtain art proves bigger is better … & it’s better on a budget. Yes ladies & gents, it’s not myth, bigger really is better. 😉 At least, that’s what I’ve learned from my wife, & she’s never wrong. I can’t keep track of all those times I should have listened to my wife, & I had to find out the hard way that she was right…

(e.g.: I should have listened last weekend at our pool when my wife told me to apply sunscreen…Guess what?! I turned into Lobster Husband & it was painful).

Wow, I really got way off topic. I digress…

Bigger is better, when it comes to decorating. When she told me we could achieve the “bigger look” on a budget… I was all ears. My wife is my decorating & home improvement guru. I’ve been soaking up all of her knowledge & expertise, like a porous sponge. Get ready because I’m sharing my favorite decorating tip I’ve learned from her.

How To Make No-Splatter Bacon Using The NuWave Oven (Kitchen Hack)

If you love crispy bacon but hate frying it, this post is for you! This is a fool-proof & easy way to get crispy bacon without all of the hassle, by using the NuWave Oven. I’m a man, so it’s natural that I love all things bacon. After being entranced by the infomercials for the NuWave Oven, I caved &  purchased it.

My wife totally agrees on the awesomeness that is the NuWave Oven. It’s the best purchase I made in my bachelor days… it totally makes-up for my then-bachelor obsession with buying random Target clearance purchases, like zebra wastebaskets, smoothie makers (I hated fruit then…), art supplies I never used, etc. I digress…

how to make no-splatter bacon

Our NuWave Oven is the best bacon maker ever!!!! My wife & I only eat our bacon crispy & this appliance delivers consistent crispy bacon every time. It’s also the best way to meal-prep bacon. Not only does it make the best bacon, it’s also super easy to use. If I could figure out how to use this before I met my wife, anyone can use this. 🙂

HOW DO YOU USE THE NUWAVE OVEN?

bacon slices in the NuWave Oven

  1. Lay your raw bacon slices on the rack, making sure they aren’t overlapping each other.
  2. Place the lid on
  3. To set the timer for crispy bacon, press “cook time” “1” “2” & “start”

NuWave Oven control panel

After 12 minutes, you have delicious crispy bacon! The best part is that there are no grease splatters & no endlessly turning the bacon strips. This puts on end to grease-splattered clothes.

COOK ONCE, EAT SEVERAL TIMES

We usually meal-prep 3 pounds of bacon at a time. You can find out how & why we meal-prep bacon here. If you’re looking for a quick & easy “recipe” for breakfast with bacon, check out our Gluten-Free Breakfast Wraps.  If you love odd combinations, try dipping the bacon into salsa you can thank me after you try it.

The NuWave Oven is the kitchen hack that will deliver no-splatter bacon in 3 easy steps. Once you use this small appliance, you will wonder how you made bacon in the past.

NuWave Oven Rocks!!
