Walk-In Pantry Makeover + Organization Tips

Walk-In Pantry Makeover + Organization Tips

Thanks to Ben Franklin, our frugality & leftover materials, our walk-in pantry makeover cost less than $250.00! We transformed our walk-in pantry into a functional, organized & glamorous extension of our modern kitchen. Imagine walking into your kitchen pantry … just to admire it! The gorgeous Sputnik chandelier, cool-toned wall color & the luxury vinyl faux marble tiles makes us stop & stare.

Paint hack #2: Don’t bother protecting the floor if you’re replacing it.

  • Install modern & funky light fixture
    • Sputnik chandelier = $95.99
    • Edison light bulbs = $40.98*
      • *Rookie Mistake: We didn’t order enough light bulbs, yikes! It takes 8 but we only ordered 6 Edison bulbs the first time. This is the adult version of a child receiving a toy without the batteries included.

Note to Self: Don’t forget to order light bulbs in the future.

  • Added another shelf
    • Wire shelf + brackets + vertical support = $61.25
      • Adding another shelf elevates your line of vision, which makes the space look & feel larger.

Raise your shelving, raise your line of vision.

THANKS TO BEN FRANKLIN, OUR TOTAL COST WAS LOW

The total out-of-pocket cost was only $238.22, because of 2 very important decisions & a frugal tip from Benjamin Franklin & an investment book.

WALK-IN PANTRY MAKEOVER: DESIGN DECISIONS

#1. Making our design plans around leftover materials.

◊ I had a strong urge to go really bold with a paint color {that we didn’t have in our stash}, but a nugget of information from Benjamin Franklin & the authors of this book, changed our mindset.

◊ “A penny saved is a penny earned” – famously quoted by B.F. is a positive falsehood. Thanks to compound interest, $1.00 saved today can become $8.00 in 30 years.

◊ So… instead of money, we made due with what we had in our DIY stash. Because an unnecessary dollar spent is $8.00 lost.

#2. Opt for projects with return on investment {ROI} potential.

◊ Wire shelving is on my “designer shit list.” BUT… my love of frugality & ROI is stronger {just by an iota} than my hatred for wire shelving.

Replacing all of the wire shelving would easily cost $300.00. Since it’s described as a “custom upgrade” in every home listing I’ve read, we kept it. Even though it kills my designer soul.

7 ORGANIZATIONAL TIPS FOR A WALK-IN PANTRY

Tip # 1: Visual Trickery

♦ Add another shelf to visually expand your space & add more storage space, too!

◊You can use this designer trick to make any space look & feel larger. This designer trick can also be used to hang curtains.

Visually expand a space without knocking down sheet rock.

Tip #2: Lazy Susans

♦ Store like-items on Lazy Susans to prevent items from being out-of-sight & out-of-mind.

Note to Nerdy Self: Research the origin of the name: Lazy Susan.

Tip # 3: Maximize Wasted Space

♦ Add a broom hook to the wall to get things off the floor.

♦ Install an IKEA plastic bag dispenser on the wall.

♦ Stick command hooks to the back of the door to hang aprons

Super Heroes in the kitchen & in kitchen pantry designs.

Tip #4: Visual Trick: Many Things = One Thing

♦ Use storage bins & boxes to store like-items.

◊ A re-purposed heavy-duty coconut water box helps keep plates from our George Foreman Grill & our 4-in-1 grill in one place.

♦ Instead of seeing many items, you visually see one collective thing, which greatly reduces visual clutter. This also helps us to quickly find exactly what we need, without unnecessary rummaging.

Tip #5: IKEA wicker basket

Store your produce in wicker baskets if you don’t have space for a potato bin.

No room for a produce bin? No problem, IKEA to the rescue.

Tip # 6: Repurpose an IKEA pot lid organizer

Vertically file muffin tins in an IKEA Variera pot lid organizer.

Tip # 7: Stack glass casserole dishes

Place a glass casserole dish on the bottom & its inverted lid on top & repeat. No more searching for a lid, because it’s conveniently underneath the casserole dish.

Stack & stack until you can’t stack anymore.

BEFORE & AFTER PANTRY PICTURES SPEAK VOLUMES
before and after walk-in pantry makeover

It’s hard to give yourself credit for how far you’ve come if you forgot where you started.

Perfect preparation saves time & money. We resisted the urge to skip planning & budgeting, for such a small footprint that is our walk-in pantry. Brian Tracy, author of Eat That Frog!, proposes that perfect preparation can save you hours in execution.

It’s so easy to grossly underestimate the time & money that’s required for a small space makeover. Going overboard & overspending in a small space is too easy. If we jumped-in without planning & weighing the ROI potential for each project, we could have easily spent $700.00… for a pantry… in a home that we plan to sell in a few years.

Kitchen Coat Closet Makeover

Kitchen Coat Closet Makeover

If our musical kitchen closets were a soap opera, they would appropriately be called, “As the Closet Turns.” Because holy fuck, this kitchen coat closet makeover we’re discussing today has had its fair share of “drama” & role changes. Discover how & why we transformed a coat closet into a reach-in kitchen pantry & then back into a coat closet again. You don’t want to miss my tips on how to create a practical coat closet, using the “dead space” to maximize storage in a small kitchen.

AS THE CLOSET TURNS…

After our engagement, we combined 2 very full homes. To accommodate our “extra stuff,” this bachelor coat closet was hastily transformed into a pantry with unfinished floating white shelves. Now that we’ve evolved, paired-down & gave our kitchen a makeover & have re-sale in mind, we converted this kitchen pantry back into a coat closet.

transform a coat closet into a pantry and then back into a coat closet

From Bachelor Coat Closet into a hasty kitchen pantry & then back into a coat closet again… but much better than the 1st coat closet.

SAFETY FIRST…

If there’s anything I’m more paranoid about than our home catching fire, it’s our home flooding from a fire sprinkler. To allay my paranoia, Jonathan installed a fire sprinkler cage BEFORE we converted the bachelor coat closet into a kitchen pantry.

cage for fire sprinkler to prevent accidents

#SorryNotSorry, we didn’t remove the cage when painting to convert this pantry into a coat closet.

It’s reckless to have a sprinkler head in a closet with a low ceiling & NO cage. This cage gives me peace of mind from worrying that something won’t accidentally hit the sprinkler head & flood our home.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY KITCHEN COAT CLOSET MAKEOVER

The best DIY home improvements are free or cost next-to-nothing. We only spent $2.50 for the clothing rod brackets. We used paint from our stash; re-used 1 of the white floating shelves & shopped our home for the blue “shoe cubby” & the fabric storage bins.

Side Note: We’re huge advocates for using what you have! Do the fabric bins match? No, not at all. Life isn’t perfect & neither is every single one of our DIY projects. In this case, DONE & PRACTICAL is better than PERFECTION.

organize & maximize the dead space in your kitchen coat closet

Don’t have time to read this long post with tons of helpful tips? Pin it for later to easily come back to it.

KITCHEN COAT CLOSET MAKEOVER

First, we removed all of the white floating shelves & brackets from the pantry EXCEPT for one to repurpose for the coat closet. We repurposed the removed floating shelves in our other kitchen closet.

coat closet with 1 floating shelf

There were many unfinished floating shelves, now there’s only one.

Okay, so we technically did remove the remaining white shelf, so we could paint the walls, ceiling & floating shelf brackets.

floating shelf in coat closet

We waited until the paint CURED before installing the clothing rod brackets.

PRO TIPS:

  • To get the floating shelf aesthetic, you need to paint the shelf brackets the same color as the wall. We used Behr’s Classic Silver, the same color as our stairway.
  • As with any small space, if you paint the ceiling the same color as the walls, it makes the space look & feel larger.
  • To avoid your freshly painted walls looking like complete shit, WAIT UNTIL THE PAINT HAS CURED BEFORE INSTALLING ANYTHING!
  • It’s important to wait until your freshly painted walls have CURED before installing anything. So many people make the mistake of installing items on dry-to-the-touch-walls.
  • Wait at least 24 hours before installing anything to avoid those hideous lines of demarcation.

Almost impossible to get a picture without a shadow from the door.

COAT CLOSET ORGANIZATION HACKS
  • You can never go wrong with fabric storage bins!
  • Always opt for fabric storage bins or bins made with natural materials.
    • Unlike plastic bins, fabric storage bins are non-toxic & don’t “off-gas”

I repurposed a metal stand {that was my grandparents} into a shoe cubby with leftover fabric storage bins from my bedroom closets. I used 2 other leftover closet bins to organize our winter gear, umbrellas, scarves & hats.

organize a coat closet with fabric storage bins

It was almost pure luck that these pink & white bins fit into this metal stand that my grandpa used to use as a coffee station.

THE CLOSET DOOR IS OUR KITCHEN COMMAND CENTER

My favorite part about this kitchen coat closet makeover is how we maximized the space on the back of the door. Okay, so we actually maximized this space before converting the pantry back to a coat closet. BUT… we did organize it a bit better & replaced the cardboard on the bottom shelves with a “classier” version.

Although the repurposed curtain packaging is plastic, it works so well to organize the most practical items from Ikea.

kitchen command center makeover

From “trashy” to “classy.” Haha!

The top of our kitchen command center is just as practical. We used small command hooks, binder clips, labels & an Ikea dog butt hook to organize our coupons & our freezer cooking supplies.

organized kitchen command center

Seriously, every time I open this door, the cute dog butt hook makes me smile.

The pre-cut unbleached wax paper sheets save us a ton of time when we prepare our delicious seasoned “freezer burgers.”

best way to organize coupons

The BEST way to store & organize coupons. It doesn’t get any easier or more practical than this!

Do you want to know a secret? The front of this very same door works just as hard as the back of the door. It’s true, the front of this door helps us with our monthly meal plans & grocery lists

Conquer Paper Clutter With A Mobile Office

Is paper clutter creating stress in your life? Do you need an easy system to handle your mail as soon as you’ve opened it? We used to have piles of mail & important papers throughout our home until we couldn’t take the chaos a minute longer. Discover how to create a mobile office, hacks to keep it organized & free printable labels to get you started!

conquer paper clutter with a mobile office plus free printable labels to help you get started

MOBILE OFFICE =  PERFECT PROBLEM SOLVER

We created a mobile office – a “one-stop shop” where all mail, incoming papers & basic office supplies have a home. After we created a home filing system in our office, we knew we also needed a system for incoming mail. This mobile office has been the PERFECT solution to prevent mail from cluttering our home.

The #1 key to bringing organization into your life is to actually have a “space” or a “home” for every item. Instead of going on a scavenger hunt to find that bill that needs to be paid & then going on more scavenger hunts to find envelopes, stamps & pens, it’s all in a “one-stop shop.”

10 BASIC ESSENTIALS YOUR MOBILE OFFICE NEEDS

  2. Envelopes
  3. Return address labels**
  4. Stamps
  5. Tape
  6. Paper clips
  7. Envelope opener (optional)
  8. Notebook &/or notepad**

  10. Post-it flags – these are great to mark documents that don’t require your attention now, but you’ll want to review later.

4 ORGANIZING HACKS FOR YOUR MOBILE OFFICE

This wouldn’t be an H&S organizing post if I didn’t discuss “re-purposeful” organization! I’ve got 4 ingenious mobile office hacks to inspire you!

ORGANIZING HACK #1

Do you want to know the most ingenious mobile office hack?…

old notebook with dividers becomes re-purposeful organizer for household manuals & warranties

I repurposed a notebook with dividers (that I’ve had for ages) & used the pockets in the dividers a place to store random household manuals & warranties that come with appliances. Although you could use a hanging file folder, the pockets in these dividers help to keep the small booklets from getting loose.

ORGANIZING HACK #2

Organization doesn’t have to stop with papers in this mobile office. To corral all of the essential supplies, I repurposed a small box (from Birchbox’s shop) to keep everything in 1 place that can easily be lifted out.

The repurposed little box conveniently fits down inside the mobile office basket. But wait… there’s more re-purposeful organizing hacks…

ORGANIZING HACK #3

The pens are stored inside an old magnetic fridge pen holder that we weren’t using.

ORGANIZING HACK #4

I also repurposed a blue travel Q-tip container to store paper clips & post-it flags. This little container comes in handy since it snaps shut, keeping the items inside from getting loose.

FIGHT PAPER CLUTTER WITH A MOBILE OFFICE

Mail is a constant. 6 days a week you have incoming paper coming into your home. Unless you have a mobile office system in place, the overwhelm of paper clutter in inevitable. Fight back against paper clutter with a mobile office to simplify & organize your life.

good being beauty box review – January 2018

good being beauty box review – January 2018

Discover the 6 organic beauty products I received in the first good being beauty box of 2018. This January 2018 non-toxic & organic beauty box has a value of $66.50. That’s like paying $20.00 to try green beauty products & getting $46.50 in free green beauty products. If you haven’t heard of good being, they guarantee at least a $45.00 value per box.

Green Beauty Products in my January 2018 good being box:

MY NATURAL BEAUTY PICKS FOR JANUARY

A few weeks before your organic beauty box ships, you have the option to pick 2 items to be included in your box.

Gaffer & Child // Facial Cleanser // full-size // $26.00

This pick was pretty much a no-brainer for me. I’m obsessed with skin care, love trying new green beauty brands & you can’t get more practical than a facial cleanser. This facial cleanser is AMAZING & blows my $80.00 cleanser out of the water!

Gaffer & Child facial cleanser in January good being box

This all-natural & organic cleanser removes every stitch of my organic foundation & leaves my skin feeling refreshed without feeling tight & dry. This is definitely my favorite & I will re-purchase this cleanser again.

Élan Veda // All Headaches Essential Oil Roll-On // travel-size // $10.00

Every so often I suffer from debilitating migraines for days at a time & while I would do anything for relief, I have a strong stance against pharma drugs. The delivery of my good being box this month came during another one of my migraine episodes. I tried this headache oil after receiving cranial adjustments & electrical muscle stimulation from my chiropractor, because I was still in a great deal of pain.

all headache essential oil blend in green beauty box

While I refer to myself as a hippie, I remain skeptical about the efficacy of essential oils. The few times I’ve tried essential oils in “healing-type” products, they never worked for me… & this product didn’t work for me either.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I do have an autoimmune disorder;  experience pain that’s more than just “surface-level”; & it took about 5 chiropractor visits to correct the pain.

Despite my stance on essential oils for pain relief, this oil blend smells amazing, so I’ll be using this as a calming oil.

CURATED GREEN BEAUTY ITEMS FROM GOOD BEING BEAUTY BOX’S TEAM

AILA // 11-free Nail Laquer in Bless Your Heart // full-size // $14.00

I would describe this nail polish color as a gorgeous rose/mauve, but the info card describes it as a deep peachy rose. Same difference, right?

AILA 11-free non-toxic nail polish in Bless Your Heart

Even better than the gorgeous color, this nail polish is free of the 11 most toxic ingredients found in most nail polishes. I haven’t heard of or tried anything from the AILA brand, but that’s probably because Trust Fund Beauty is my holy-grail for “less toxic” nail polish.

full-size nail polish in my organic beauty box

AILA // 3-in-1 Soy Based Nail Color Remover Cloths // 1 cloth // $1.00

Trust Fund Beauty is also my go-to for all-natural nail polish remover … & it smells amazing!! Even though I do try to avoid soy as much as possible, I may give this remover cloth a try. The info card states that it’s 100% natural, plant-based & free of acetone & acetate.

plant-based nail polish remover

Previse DermApothecary // Marine Granules Skin Brightening Botanical Scrub // travel-size // $11.25

I have a moisturizer from Previse & love it, but I’m not a huge fan of this marine botanical face scrub. I’m very particular with face scrubs & don’t like ones with particles as tiny as sand.

previse facial scrub in good being January box

I tried this once & it was almost impossible to remove all of the scrub particles from my face. I will stick to my holy-grail face scrub & won’t be purchasing the full-size of this product.

good being info card on previse face scrub

Stinkbug Organics // Natural Deodorant in Tangerine Spice // travel-size // $3.95

I’ve had the worst experiences with the majority of non-toxic deodorants that I’ve tried. Mostly because my skin doesn’t react well to sodium bicarbonate {baking soda}. Between a week to a month is when my skin decides to develop an allergic reaction to sodium bicarbonate. Trust me, it’s NOT fun to have inflamed armpits that feel raw & on fire.

Stinkbug Naturals deodorant

Yet, I decided to at least give this brand a try for 2 days. Thankfully, my skin didn’t react like a jerk, but… holy shit, my arm pits stunk so fucking bad. It’s bizarre because it takes a LOT to make me sweat… like I’d have to run a mile before I start sweating.

paraben & aluminum free deo in good being

It’s even more bizarre because my body has already gone through the “toxic deodorant de-tox” phase 2 years ago. Nevertheless, this deodorant is going in the trash & I’ll stick to my Thai Crystal Deodorant Stone.

GOOD BEING BEAUTY BOX – MY JANUARY 2018 VERDICT

Green beauty subscription boxes are like boxes of chocolate, you never know what you’re going to get! This month’s box was so-so for me, not quite as awesome as my July or November boxes. The stand-out green beauty item that I will purchase is the face cleanser. I’m excited to paint my nails & use the new plant-based nail polish remover. The other 3 items didn’t impress me – especially the natural deodorant.

This is the 1st of 3 good being beauty box reviews that I’ll be sharing this year. I cancelled my subscription, but will still receive February & March boxes since I paid for the quarterly subscription. The main reason is that I want to use what I already have & avoid hyper-consumption.

BE A GODDESS & SHOP GREEN BEAUTY!

Vintage Map Transforms Into Multi-Panel Art

Vintage Map Transforms Into Multi-Panel Art

There are a million things you can do with a vintage map that make uniquely awesome home decor. We transformed our vintage National Geographic map into diy multi-panel art in less than 1 hour. Multi-panel art is the best way to decorate around a wall-mounted TV. This DIY art project has only 2 panels, so it’s referred to diptych art. If you’re looking for a threesome, check out this triptych art project we did for our master bathroom.

SUPPLIES FOR MAP WALL DÉCOR

  • craft foam brushes
  • vintage map {cut in half}
  • acrylic paint
  • 2 art canvases {ours are 24″ x 30″}
  • Mod Podge {We used the Gloss version}
  • Command Strips {for easy hanging}

 VINTAGE MAP SACRIFICE

We had qualms about cutting up my grandfather’s vintage map. The map that came from a National Geographic magazine, that he collected & hoarded like they were valuable bars of gold. Don’t have a grandfather that hoarded cool shit? Tragic. Source your local thrift shops, Etsy or eBay for vintage maps.

vintage National Geographic map

Framing this map as-is would have been too expected for us.

BUT… the only way we could reuse the vintage map to decorate around our wall-mounted TV was to cut it in half. In the name of art, we gave zero fucks about sacrificing it.

STEP-BY-STEP VINTAGE MAP TRANSFORMATION

STEP ONE:

  • Cut your map in half
  • Paint 2 art canvases with acrylic paint.
    • You only have to paint the areas that the map won’t cover.
    • Don’t forget to paint the edges of the canvas, too!

Black… our favorite color ever.

STEP TWO:

  • Take your cut map pieces & mock them up on the art canvases to determine which placement you prefer.
mock-up your vintage map pieces before using mod podge

Mock-it up

STEP THREE:

  • Using a craft foam brush, generously apply Mod Podge to both art canvases.
  • We applied Mod Podge to the entirety of the canvas – not just where the map will be placed.
diy map art project

Thank you to my DIY-partner-in-crime for being the hand & arm model for this project.

STEP FOUR:

  • Carefully place the cut map pieces {one at a time} on each canvas.
  • To avoid as many bubbles as possible, it’s best to have another person helping you to smooth it out as you lay the map down onto the canvas.
  • Apply 1- 2 layers of Mod Podge on top of the map once it’s positioned on the Mod-Podged canvas.
upcycled vintage map art project | final step

Has there ever been a better Mod Podge hand model? I think not…

WHY MULTI-PANEL ART?
  • Stands out! A single piece of art can be boring & uninteresting.
  • Dramatic! There’s a lot of visual interest when art is broken up into multiple panels. The spacing between the panels also create drama.
  • Convenient! If your available wall space is smaller than the art piece as a whole, just cut it!
  • Easier to move! Multiple pieces of art are easier to move than one gigantic piece of art.

 DIPTYCH VINTAGE MAP WALL DECOR

The bad news? …

diy topography map

Thanks to the stubborn creases from being folded for decades, this map is now a topography map.

Our vintage map had been folded for decades & the creases from the folds made it almost impossible to remove all of the bubbles. The good news? The silver lining is that we now have an unintended topography map. 🙂 When you look for the positives, the negatives become obsolete.
