15 Frugal Tips To Save Money & the Planet

Here at H&S, we share frugal tips to save money with creative solutions & DIY projects. Although DIY projects do save money, they require a time commitment. You can use these 15 frugal tips to save money & the environment in no time at all! It’s a win-win.

We admit… this is a HUGE article. To make the info easier to digest, we broke it down into 4 easy categories: saving money with clutter & trash; smart shopping “hacks”; saving money by repurposing & easy swaps you can make to save you money.

In addition to these 15 frugal money-saving tips, we’ve also included a few special referral links that give you an added savings.

2 FRUGAL TIPS TO SAVE MONEY WITH CLUTTER & TRASH

DONATIONS

Not to be a judgmental tree-hugger, but I despise people that toss perfectly good items in the trash. It’s a shame these items end up in the landfill, when they could have been used by someone else.

IF we were that type of asshole, we would have contributed 567 items to the landfill in 2017. But we did the environmentally {& financially!} responsible thing… we donated 564 items to Goodwill & 3 items to Habitat for Humanity Restore.

frugal tips to save money with donating

Instead of clogging up the landfills, we receive a tax deduction receipt that we benefit from at tax time.

RECYCLING

Yes, this is a frugal tip to save money. Back in the day, we used to be those assholes that didn’t recycle… if I could go back in time, I’d throw a hard-back book at our faces. Fast forward to today, & we literally have ZERO excuses NOT to recycle. {Especially when recycling is included in our expensive HOA fees.}

recycling quote

This is cringe-worthy, but before we recycled, we generated a ton of trash & were always buying trash bags! Like. All. The. Time! News Flash: trash bags are NOT cheap & cheap trash bags are worthless.

How does this save money? Recycling centers discourage using trash bags, because something ugly happens. We use a vinyl reusable grocery bag that we keep under our sink cabinet & dump it when it’s full in the recycle bin outside.

3 FRUGAL TIPS TO SAVE MONEY BY CHANGING YOUR SHOPPING HABITS

THRIVE MARKET MEMBERSHIP

frugal tips to save money on healthy groceries

Aside from saving consumers hundreds of dollars in groceries, Thrive Market also saves the environment with their eco-friendly policies. They minimize their carbon footprint by NOT shipping “one-off-orders.” Their free-shipping offers with orders over $49.00 actually help to encourage consumers to purchase bulk orders.

Pro Tips:

  • Use this referral link to save even more money.
  • Maximize your savings with Thrive, by timing your bulk orders around their free GWP {gift with purchase} offers OR around their 10%, 15% or 20% off entire order promotions.

BYOB {BRING YOUR OWN BAGS}

Yes, bringing your own reusable bags can actually save you money! Trader Joe’s & Whole Foods gives you a discount for each bag that you bring.

I have a confession about BYOB… they give me major fucking anxiety if I’m walking into a store with branded bags from another store. Why? Because stupid people make me lose my shit. My pet peeve is “Captain Obvious”… you know those people that state the obvious because they’re not intelligent enough to discuss original ideas. BUT… I love saving the environment, so I deal…

SAMPLES OVER FULL-SIZE ITEMS

If you want to try new makeup, paint, etc., try a sample first! I recently wanted to try organic foundation from Crunchi & Nu Evolution. I didn’t want to spend $50 on either of them to find out I ordered the wrong shade, hated the scent or that my skin type didn’t react well.

I ordered samples, tried them, loved them & bought the full-size. IF I would have bought the full-size versions first to determine that I hated them, it would have only added to the unnecessary items headed to the landfill. {Because buying &/or selling used cosmetics is beyond gross.}

4 FRUGAL TIPS TO SAVE MONEY BY REPURPOSING

THINK “INSIDE” THE BOX

Organizational storage bins & boxes are typically overpriced & can be difficult to find in a specific size. Think “inside the box” to repurpose boxes you already have! It saves money, headaches & the environment! We’ve repurposed boxes into free organizers in almost every room in our home.

THINK “INSIDE” THE BAG

We do not use reusable grocery bags for raw meat, so we end up collecting plastic & brown paper bags. If you’ve read our article on the free items you need when painting, you’ll know just how helpful repurposing plastic & brown paper bags can be!

frugal money tips with ideas of items to repurpose

By re-using the plastic bags as “paint brush preservers” in-between coats, we save a ton of money on paint brushes. The plastic bag also saves a crusty paint brush from the landfill.

REPURPOSE BATH LINENS

Instead of tossing out worn washcloths, repurpose them into “makeup removers.” Instead of tossing used & worn towels, donate them to your local animal shelter!

Animal shelters can always use towels! Before donating your towels, confirm that the shelter can give you a donation receipt for tax purposes.

CREATE A RUNNING LIST

Keep a running list of items you want & need. This is the BEST way to be aware of what you need & to plan out your purchases. If it’s written down, it’s easier to think of items you already own that you can repurpose or upcycle. Having your purchases you want to make written down also helps you to spend consciously.

My Real-Life Example: Instead of buying a wood scoop for our bath salts, I repurposed a vintage tea cup. Never underestimate how the little things can add up to big savings.

6 FRUGAL TIPS TO SAVE MONEY WITH SWAPS

DOLLAR SHAVE CLUB

Razors are incredibly expensive, especially if you have sensitive skin! I used to buy those expensive disposable razors, because they were cheaper than purchasing cartridge refills!… I “saved” money, but this “little habit” was so bad for the planet.

In 3 years, I ‘ve saved 624 disposable razors from going to the landfill! My monthly DSC subscription costs less than those expensive disposable razors I used to buy all the time.

P.S. – DSC customer service is beyond fantastic & their razors are kind to my sensitive skin.

PRO TIPS:

  • Use our referral link to save money!
  • Buy an extra razor handle & an extra refill cartridge to keep in your travel toiletry bag.

CHANGE YOUR DETERGENT

Before transforming into non-toxic & tree-hugging organic weirdos, we used to use toxic liquid laundry detergent.

We were ALWAYS buying detergent. It wasn’t great for our wallet & the toxins in the detergent weren’t great for the environment either.

Click me to read a review of Molly’s.

We tried Molly’s & fell in love. This simple swap has saved us a lot of money, because you only need 1 Tablespoon per load. As a bonus, this natural swap doesn’t pollute the water.

ECO-FRIENDLY COFFEE

I cringe now, but we used to make coffee with “K Machines.” After reading about the mold issues & the city in Germany that banned them, we kicked ours to the curb {aka we sold it.}

{P.S. Germany is woke AF when it comes to recycling – their sanitary workers will dump your trash all over your lawn if they see recycles in it.}

Our “old-fashioned” coffee maker is free from mold issues, saves us money from buying expensive coffee pods & the environment wins from less waste.

Pro Tip: The best value for organic coffee.

GET “COCO” WITH IT

Coconut oil has a million uses. My favorite is to use it to remove eye makeup. Eye makeup remover is hella-expensive & doesn’t last long, which adds unnecessary waste to the landfill.

I purchased a 14 oz. jar of coconut oil 4 years ago to keep in my bathroom to use as an all-natural eye makeup remover & I’m still using that same jar today! To make it easier to use, I scoop coconut oil from the large jar into a small glass jar.

BOTTLES TO BARS

Whether you buy the toxic or non-toxic versions of body wash, they are expensive & the packaging creates a ton of waste.

We tried Kiss My Face soap bars, & surprisingly fell in love. Surprised because we had been avid body wash lovers. If you want to save money & the planet, we highly recommend these soap bars.

PRO TIP:

  • KMF bars are super cheap at Thrive Market. {Use our referral link to save even more money!}

PRINTER INK

Printer ink is so damn expensive! I soooo wish we would have joined HP Instant Ink a lot sooner than last year, because we lost out on a lot of savings.

With every ink cartridge they send, you also get a pre-paid poly mailer to return old cartridge to their recycling program. Use our referral link to enjoy 1 FREE month of HP Instant Ink!
