How To Lengthen & Embellish Curtains Without A Sewing Machine
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX…
After we painted our home office & den, we decided that the office curtains would look much better hanging in the den. The only problem is that they were too short. With some “out of the box” thinking, I came up with a solution.
Each curtain panel was wide enough, that we only needed to hang 3 of the 6 grey & white curtain panels. The picture below is terrible quality (sorry!) but it’s a visual to show how they came up short. (totally not a good look.)
I came up with a great idea to create no-sew curtains. Since I only needed to hang 3 curtain panels, I decided to cut up the remaining 3. The “leftover 3” became “parts” to add length & embellishments to the 3 “keep curtains”.
The best part?…
I did not sew one stitch to add length or to add the embellishments. These no-sew curtains were faux sew easy. Length & embellishments were added to these no-sew curtains without ever using a sewing machine.
WHAT YOU NEED FOR NO-SEW CURTAINS:
- Stitch Witchery
- I used this one, rated for heavy fabric.
- Wrist pin cushion
- Optional, BUT this makes it so much easier!
HOW I ACHIEVED NO-SEW CURTAINS
I cut the bottoms off the bottom of 3 of the “leftover curtains” – just above the scroll design.
I carefully cut around the scroll design to separate it from the fabric. The bottom will eventually become the “new” bottom to the other curtains to lengthen them. The scroll will eventually become the additional embellishment that I’ll add to the top of the curtains.
ALMOST TOO BEAUTIFUL TO CUT…
Aren’t the scroll designs pretty? If I didn’t use them to embellish the curtains, they would make beautiful table runners.
I cut the white scrolls away from the gray fabric. I pinched the gray fabric together & made a slit with scissors to make it easier to cut them out. This was a bit time consuming, but that’s why Hotel Hell marathons were created.
I cut across the gray fabric that was left from cutting out the white scrolls to make it straight -ish.
ADDING LENGTH TO NO-SEW CURTAINS
This is the fun part! Since these curtains are thick & heavy, I used a Stitch Witchery rated for heavier fabrics. You will need a very hot iron for this to work. This particular type of no-sew adhesive is a bit different than others I’ve used. You don’t have the added step of peeling off a “backing.” With the Super Weight Stitch Witchery, all you have to do is lay it between your fabric & blast it with your hot iron.
ADDING EMBELLISHMENTS TO NO-SEW CURTAINS
With the hubby’s help, I carefully placed & pinned the shapeless scrolls where I wanted them.
The fun begins again! I cut really small pieces of narrow stitch witchery & carefully placed them underneath the white scrolls. I worked in small sections at a time, removing a few pins; placing small cut pieces of stitch witchery under the scrolls & blasted it with a hot iron. I finished this part relatively quickly, in under an hour.
IT’S FAUX SEW EASY
In 7 time-consuming but faux sew easy steps, we have gorgeous long curtains with added embellishments to break-up all of the grey at the top of the curtains. Every time I look at these curtains hanging in our den, my heart smiles. I love them so much! I love that with some “out of the box” thinking, I was able to devise a plan to repurpose & reuse our old curtains.
