Rub N Buff Jewelry Display {Animal Shelter Thrift Benefit}

We are so excited about this post today! It combines both of our passions – DIY & bringing awareness to animal adoption. This rub n buff jewelry display is our DIY project for this year’s Animal Shelter Thrift Benefit, organized by Jeanette

What’s the Animal Thrift Shelter Benefit?…

DIY bloggers collaborate to bring awareness to thrift shops whose proceeds benefit animal shelters. Each blogger purchases an item from their local animal thrift shop & transforms it with their awesome DIY skills.

Get ready to be inspired… to thrift, to support your local animal shelter {more info on how}… & maybe even adopt an adorable fur baby of your own! 🙂

SPCA Thrift Shop aka Animal Thrift Shop

SPCA Thrift Shop

2225 Valley Avenue

Winchester, VA 22601

Hours: 10am – 6pm daily {except Sundays}

We ventured an hour outside of the Northern Virginia area to the SPCA Thrift Shop in Winchester. Trust me when I  say that this thrift shop is a hidden gem. 🙂 This shop made me feel like I was rummaging around in my granny’s basement … lots of antique, vintage & estate-quality items. Vintage furniture, dishware, fabric, sewing patterns, bric-a-brac & so much more!

Amazing Animal Thrift Shop Deals…

We loved that in addition to their super reasonable prices, they also had crazy good sales! All of the items are priced with a color-coded price tag… depending on the color of the tag, items could be 25%, 50% or even 75% off of the price! This means that their inventory is constantly changing … a reason for us to definitely go back.

What did we buy at the thrift shop?…

  • Crackle glass dish with lion base – $5.00
  • Mysterious slab of marble – only $.62!  – 75% off the blue tag price!
    • Any ideas on what this was originally? Hubster thinks it was once a cutting board… but the weird crevice makes me think maybe not?? It doesn’t seem very hygienic, am I right?
  • We couldn’t help ourselves … we also bought other items for future projects. 😉

For the lion dish…

For the marble…

We absolutely love the finish that rub ‘n buff gives items. It’s the perfect option for items with a lot of detail that you don’t want masked by spray paint. It’s incredibly easy to use, just apply a small dab onto your gloved fingers & rub onto your surface. It covered so well that it only required 1 coat.

Not a fan of amber…

As you can see from the before pictures, the glass dish had a beautiful crackle design, but the hideous amber color made it feel outdated.

Since I just wanted to get rid of the amber, but keep the crackle, I used Krylon’s Looking Glass. It’s a very sheer spray paint with reflective mirror-like qualities. We used 3 very light coats to achieve the desired coverage.

Crazy about marble…

I don’t know what it is, but I’m really drawn to marble. For only 62 cents, how could I pass it up? I’m going to be totally honest… this was our first time cutting marble. Jonathan did his best with his angle grinder & diamond tipped masonry blade, but it could probably benefit from some refining later.

You could say it’s a bit rough around the edges?….

As unrefined as the cut edge may be, I’m still in love with it. To prevent the marble from scratching any surfaces, I added felt pads to the bottom.

When we first ventured out on this upcycled animal thrift shop project, I thought I’d use it on my nightstand. But… I recently decorated my nightstand for Halloween & didn’t have any space left.

The plot twist?…

This upcycled jewelry organizer has found a home on Jonathan’s Ikea nightstand. 🙂 It couldn’t be more perfect!

Could there be anything more manly than storing your jewelry in a lion dish? I think not.

Lions = pretty damned manly décor. 😉

Is there anything more gratifying than an awesome before & after? Well yes… this rub ‘n buff jewelry display project is supporting & bringing awareness to supporting local animal shelters. 🙂

    Could the marble be the base of a cheese cutter, the one that has a wire to cut the cheese?

    Awesome finds and I’m stumped too on what that marble was in it’s before life??? Great job making it work and I love how it all turned out!

      Awe, thank you so much! I’m pretty sure the marble will remain a mysterious mystery.
