Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce {Freezer-Friendly}

Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce {Freezer-Friendly}

This slow cooker spaghetti sauce was the result of one of our recipe experiments last year. It’s chunky, full of flavor, freezes & re-heats well & is a huge time saver for busy nights. We’ve perfected this spaghetti sauce recipe with the right amount of tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, organic seasonings & a ton of garlic.

Without fail, we make this “sketty sauce” every month on our bulk freezing cooking days. Yes, in our house, it’s “sketty sauce” & not “spaghetti sauce.”

This is one of my all-time favorite recipes, because it’s a “cook once & have several “free dinners.” What the hell does that mean? Pick one day during the month for a freezer cooking day, so that you can give yourself several dinners during the month that are free of any major preparation. Our make-ahead gluten-free lasagna is another great freezer cooking recipe.

Aside from saving a shit load of time that would otherwise be spent in the kitchen, freezer cooking saved us a shit ton of money last year. How? The majority of our freezer meals are pre-cooked, so it’s just a matter of pulling it out of the freezer, de-frosting it & re-heating it. Every time we eat a freezer meal, it saves us $50-$60 that would have been spent on take-out. **We also save a bunch of money by shopping Thrive Market for the quinoa pasta & organic spices.**

Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce {Freezer-Friendly}

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 10 hours

Total Time: 10 hours, 15 minutes

This spaghetti sauce is an easy "from scratch" recipe that's easy to freeze.

  • 2 lbs. ground beef OR ground sirloin {seasoned to your liking}
  • 2 T. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 onion, minced
  • 3 {14.5 oz.} cans organic diced tomatoes
  • 3 {14.5 oz.} cans organic tomato sauce
  • 1 T. dried oregano
  • 1 T. dried basil
  • 6 cloves garlic {more, less OR omit to accommodate taste}
  • Coconut palm sugar {optional - if you need to cut the acidity, you can add a teaspoon or so}

  1. Heat EVO in a skillet on med-high heat.
  2. Brown the ground beef, garlic cloves & onion together. {Season the beef to your liking - we add generous amounts of organic garlic powder, organic onion powder & fresh ground black pepper.}
  3. After the beef is browned {& there's no more pink}, drain-off the grease.
  4. Add the browned beef to your slow cooker, along with the canned tomato products & seasonings.
  5. I set my crock pot to "10 hours" ... but I usually allow it to simmer on "warm" for an additional 2 hours. {Personally, I find that the longer it cooks, the less acidic it is.}
  6. Cool & freeze in a glass container.
  7. TO EAT: Thaw in the refrigerator the night before dinner & re-heat on the stove. Enjoy with gluten-free quinoa pasta & freshly shredded parm cheese.
  8. IN A HURRY?: De-frost in the microwave for 3 minutes {just enough time to loosen the sauce from the glass container} & re-heat on the stove.

You may be wondering why we use only organic herbs & spices in our recipes. We actually made the decision 2 years ago to replace our entire spice cabinet with the organic versions, one-by-one. As soon as we ran out of a conventional spice, we replaced it with its organic version. Yes, the organic versions are more expensive, but it is so worth it! Why? Because you can actually smell & taste the difference!

Step One: Heat 2 Tablespoons of EVO in a skillet on med-high heat. Brown the beef, onion & garlic gloves. You can season the beef to your liking. We usually add generous amounts of organic garlic powder, organic onion powder & freshly ground black pepper. After the beef is browned, strain off the excess fat/grease.

Step Two: Add all ingredients to your slow cooker & set it to 10 hours.

  • Browned beef, onion & garlic cloves
  • Canned organic diced tomatoes;
  • Canned organic tomato sauce;
  • 1 Tablespoon of dried organic basil;
  • 1 Tablespoon of dried organic oregano.

To freeze, allow the spaghetti sauce to cool down in a glass container before freezing. Thaw it in the refrigerator overnight {before dinner} & re-heat on the stove. In a hurry? We quick-thaw ours by defrosting it in the microwave for 3 minutes, just until the sauce is loosened from the container, so we can re-heat it on the stove. Enjoy it with gluten-free quinoa pasta & freshly shredded Parmesan cheese.

Don’t take my word for it, take the organic herb challenge! Over the next few months, as you run out of conventional spices, replace them with their organic versions. Instead of smelling & eating flavorless dust from the conventional versions, you’ll be able to smell & taste the actual herb.
