Small Kitchen Pantry Makeover & A Floating Shelf Hack

Small Kitchen Pantry Makeover & A Floating Shelf Hack

Small Kitchen Pantry Makeover & A Floating Shelf Hack

We are so excited to reveal our small kitchen pantry makeover, complete with faux white floating shelves. What’s the DIY “secret” to making faux floating shelves? The secret is in the design of the brackets & painting the brackets the same color as the walls to give the illusion of floating shelves.

Unlike actual floating shelves, you don’t have to worry about these shelves warping from weight. Please don’t be one of those people using actual floating shelves for storage & ignoring the weight capacity. There’s nothing more unattractive than a weighed-down floating shelf.

TOOLS NEEDED:

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Mud Compound
  • Shelves
  • Shelving Brackets
    • We used 15 brackets at 14″ long each
  • Screws
  • Paint
    • We used Behr’s Euro Gray, our favorite cool dark paint color

MUSICAL KITCHEN CLOSETS

This small kitchen pantry makeover is part 1 of our 3-part musical kitchen closet series. We discussed in our kitchen closet plans how this closet has evolved overtime to suit our needs. It was originally a small pantry with wire shelving, until we transformed it into a tiny coat closet.

THE NEW PLANS: CONVERTING A COAT CLOSET INTO A KITCHEN PANTRY

The only problem with the coat closet is that we had to use the “shove & shut” technique to close it, which isn’t exactly a selling feature. With resale in mind, we changed directions & decided to convert this coat closet to a small kitchen pantry with DIY floating shelves.

HOW I CREATED FAUX FLOATING SHELVES IN OUR SMALL KITCHEN PANTRY MAKEOVER – THE STEP-BY-STEP:

STEP ONE:

  • I removed the old closet rods, patched & sanded all holes.

PRO TIPS:

  • When patching holes, apply mud compound in thin layers with the help of a trowel, until the desired “build-up” is achieved.
  • Once each layer has dried, use a sanding block to sand each layer to a smooth texture, before applying another layer of compound mud.

STEP TWO:

  • Mock-up where you want your faux white floating shelves to be installed in your kitchen pantry.
  • You can have as much or as little space as you want for your floating shelves.

PRO TIPS:

  • Use a pencil, ruler, tape measure & level to draw lines on the wall where you plan to install shelves.
  • Take the time to properly prepare & mock-up your floating shelves to prevent errors in execution.

STEP THREE:

  • Cut the shelving brackets to size, using a miter saw.
    • Since this kitchen closet is switching functions with another one of our kitchen closets, we were able to repurpose the “old” brackets from the other closet.

PRO TIPS:

  • If you don’t own a miter saw, most home improvement stores will cut {purchased} materials for free or for a small fee.

STEP FOUR:

  • Install the shelf supports.
    • I started by installing the one in the back first & then installed the ones on the left & right.
  • The order of installation doesn’t matter, but make sure all 3 of the shelf supports are at the same elevation & anchored into the wall.

STEP FIVE:

  • Paint the walls, ceiling & faux floating shelf hardware the same color.
  • We used our favorite paint color, which is also the same paint we used for our kitchen makeover, Behr’s Euro Gray.

PRO TIPS:

  • To ensure a clean surface for painting, use a tack cloth to wipe down the kitchen pantry of any dust & debris.
  • Using painter’s tape, protect any door or base trim from paint.

STEP SIX:

  • Cut your white floating shelves to size, using a cordless circular saw.
    • Thankfully we were able to re-purpose the shelving from our other kitchen closet, which is great for our home improvement budget!
  • Being careful to not scuff your newly painted wall, install the floating shelves onto their brackets.

PRO TIPS:

  • Measure twice, cut once. It’s possible that not all of your shelves will have the same measurements, so take the time to measure the dimensions for each shelf. For example, our small kitchen pantry was a ½” off from the front & back.
