WE FOLLOWED OUR INSPIRATION
Our inspiration for this thrift store art upcycle, stemmed from Jonathan’s hilarious encounter at the grocery store. You can read all about the hilarious encounter here. We combined Jonathan’s hilarious encounter along with my favorite childhood movie & came up with “The Beauty & The Beefcake”.
When you never want to forget something important…
What better way to prevent us from forgetting about our “couple name,” than to commemorate it on an art canvas?
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Thrifted art canvas
- OR an art canvas you no longer love
- Vinyl sticker letters
- We prefer the larger variety of vinyl letters – the bigger the letters, the less chance you have of paint seeping through.
- Craft acrylic paint
- Foam brushes
- Painter’s tape
- IF you want to keep the original sides of the canvas.
HOW TO UPCYCLE & UPDATE ART
That’s where a piece of art that I had purchased about 2 years prior at a thrift store for 99 cents comes into the picture.
I actually loved it as-is when I purchased it years ago. It was unique, colorful, different, & obviously made with love by Megan. I loved it even more because it was only 99 cents. However, I started to fall out of love with it. If you’ve read some of our other posts, you know that we love to repurpose, upcycle & reuse items.
We came up with the idea of using sticker letters on the canvas & paint over them with craft acrylic paint for our one-of-a-kind DIY Pop Art.
This old picture takes me back to my “apartment living days.” I laugh because it reminds me how much I hated that cheap apartment-grade carpet! It always had an unpleasant wet dog smell, even though the apartment building had always been pet-free. Anyways, back to the topic….
WHEN PLAN “A” FAILS, THERE ARE 25 MORE LETTERS…
Plan A didn’t turn out as planned. When we removed the letters (with a spare pair of tweezers) after painting the entire canvas, the paint had unfortunately bled underneath the small stickers & became impossible to read. Sometimes in life,
shit stuff doesn’t shake out the way you planned. After dealing with the frustration, I decided to just hand-paint the words that didn’t turn out…
OUR SUCCESSFUL THRIFT STORE ART UPCYCLE
Everything, including failure, happens for a reason. Because of our failure, we came up with a better idea. We love Plan B way more than our original Plan A. The comparison of the before & after makes me super happy that I had the idea to upcycle the thrifted artwork by painting over it, instead of tossing it. The best part? The original colorful artwork shows through in the words.
The only thing we had to purchase were the sticker letters, as we had everything else on hand. We upcycled our $0.99 thrift store art for under $8.00. That’s a total win-win.
Follow your inspiration & create your own awesome thrift store art makeover. Better yet, if you already have artwork you no longer love, upcycle it! You don’t need a ton of money or a ton of time to create your own masterpiece. What are you waiting for?
Failure shows you a better path, don’t fear it!
Love, Peace & Happiness,
